New Music: How to make an Octopus laugh
I’d like to introduce the most ambitious mix yet from #timtears. Historically, I’ve limited mixes to an hour and followed one particular theme. Currently at 75 songs and over 5 hours long “Ten Tickles” (also the answer to the joke in the title) is my greatest achievement.
“Ten Tickles” is designed for a long walk on a warm, spring day. It was inspired by a border to border walk through Venice. I hope that you can wander aimlessly and put an occasional pep in your step as you dance along.
#timtears top 5:
- “We Were Lovers” by The Analog Affair
- The soft opening and hypnotic lyrics will have you gently nodding your head and holding your heart. Analog Affair drops a soft, vibrating bass line with the first chorus that will firmly hold you through the end.
- “River Love” by Angus Stone
- Aussie Angus Stone channels Dylan in this folk masterpiece. Take 5 minutes and let it ride. Best enjoyed gazing off into the distance with a steady breeze flowing through your mane.
- “Send the Pain On” by Chrome Sparks
- I debated adding this song to my top 5 because I’m aware that it doesn’t have mass appeal. The angelic opening into a waterfall of sound is all feels for me. Close your eyes and enjoy.
- “Seven Suns” by Raury
- I first heard Raury in “Higher” by sbtrkt and was instantly blown away by his voice, cadence and lyrics. When he released his EP I expected to hear a similar style. To be honest, I’m still not exactly sure what genre music this falls under. He effortlessly transitions between world, indie rock and hip-hop. Seven Suns is my favorite track off of the album and a beautiful demonstration of his cross-genre style. Tribal drums, altruistic lyrics all build to a Pink Floydesque guitar solo and wrap up with Raury’s signature beats. This song will transport you to another world. Best enjoyed soaking in the sun.
- “(You’re My) Soul and Inspiration” by The Righteous Brothers
- This song. I really believe this song would be a hit today if it came out. The build and crescendo from 1:40 to 2:30 is timeless magic.
Inspired Spring Drink: Balliceux Pimm’s Cup
A refreshing favorite for pairing with finger sandwiches and the like, Balliceux’s spin on the classic Pimm’s Cup doubles down on the aromatics for a crisp burst of spring.
- Commonwealth Gin
- Pimm’s
- Fernet Branca
- Housemade Tonic
- Fresh Mint
- Fresh Lime
- Fresh Cucumber
Muddle the cucumber, mint, and lime in a highball glass. Combine 1oz Commonwealth Gin, or a comparable, hop-distilled gin for a less piney flavor. Add 1oz Pimm’s and top with tonic water. Finish with 1oz Fernet Branca and garnish with cucumber.
