Awakening: Fabian Rises

Fabian Fernandez, long-time friend and co producer to famed  Lionel Rizzi has released his first solo project.  “Awakening” was quietly announced with little fanfare.  I had the opportunity to meet with Fabian at his home in Los Angeles to discuss the new album.

#timtears: “What can fans expect from ‘Awakening?’

Fabian Fernandez: “I don’t think fans should go in with expectations.  This is a new project.  Whenever ‘Nel and I went into the studio, we did so seeking to create something new, unique.  We had an artistic vision and values that we remained true to, but we never sought a specific sound.  He knew what sounded cool.  His instinct for sound was on a different plane.”

tt: “Do you follow a similar process?”

FF: [laughs] “Definitely not.  ‘Nel was raw talent and could make magic out of nothing.  I always found myself seeking technical perfection.  I enjoy the precision of music.  I find myself evaluating every note, every word. It used to drive him crazy, but I also think he knew that we complimented each other.  I certainly missed his creative force.  This album was a challenge for me.  It’s a difficult process and the idea of calling an album done, is not something I am totally comfortable with”

tt: “Is that why you are not touring behind it”

FF: “No.  I’m not ready to tour.  I still miss my friend.  And, being on the road without him is not something I’m interested in at this point.”

tt: “…I can only imagine”

FF: “At the same time, I didn’t really want to tour on false expectations.  This is NOT a Lionel album.  It’s a different sound, and if our fans are into it and appreciate it it’s something we can set up some dates later on. “

tt: “Can you describe the album?”

FF: “I don’t want to label anything.  The album is an avenue for me to handle my own grief.  [rolls eyes] Elevated hip-hop dipped in soul.  That’s probably wrong, but it’s a start.

This is Fabian.  I won’t label him.  “Awakening” is an exploration into the soul of a man that considers every word and prizes precision in every note.
